Department of Justice Awards Second Chance Act Grant to OAR of Fairfax County—A two-year grant totaling $300,000 has been awarded to OAR of Fairfax County under the Second Chance Act for mentoring and transitional services. This was a national competition and only 36 organizations of the 507 applicants were awarded funding. OAR of Fairfax County was only one of two in Virginia to be selected.

The project will help inmates in the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center who have attended OAR’s “Release Planning” class, and who have agreed to participate in the Work Empowerment Program, and are returning to Fairfax County. Inmates in the Alternative Incarceration Branch accepted into OAR’s Beacon reentry program also will be eligible for this project. Participants will be assigned a mentor and provided transitional services. The goal of the project is to assist 50 participants over the two-year timeframe.
